Renovator Job in Toronto, Ontario

Individual
Carpenters
Carpenters are an essential part of most renovation jobs. They consult with clients and architects, following blueprints and designs to successfully remodel buildings. Renovations often involve various chores, such as installation of kitchen cabinets or windows, crafting of drywall or wood structures, and repairs of roofs or flooring. In order to learn these difficult and diverse tasks, many carpenters engage in a three- or four- year apprenticeship. When necessary, they also monitor and supervise laborers.
Construction Laborers and Helpers
Similar to carpenters, construction laborers and helpers work on a variety of tasks for renovation jobs, especially for large projects that require significant labor. They perform demolition work, breaking down old structures and hauling materials away in preparation for some renovation projects. Laborers support the building process as well, lending a hand to skilled craftsmen, including electricians, plumbers and masons. In contrast with skilled workers, construction laborers and helpers often learn their jobs through brief training that takes place on-site.
Work Environment
Renovation jobs take place both indoors and outdoors in all sorts of climates. The work is often physically demanding, requiring manipulation of heavy tools and materials, climbing stairs and ladders and operating in tight or awkward spaces. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, carpenters endure more injury and illness than the average worker, while construction laborers and helpers suffer one of the highest workplace injury and illness rates. Renovation jobs often require long hours that include weekend and evening work.
Pay and Outlook
Skilled renovation workers earn greater pay than their unskilled counterparts. For example, carpenters make an average of $39,530 annually, while construction laborers and helpers collect an average yearly pay of $28,410. Demand for those who do renovation jobs directly reflects economic conditions, fluctuating alongside dips and rises of the construction industry. Estimates suggest a faster increase of renovation employment compared to other occupations during the period of 2010 and 2020. The largest projected rise in demand is for those who help masons and setters, slated to increase by 60 percent during that same decade.
